I possess a remarkable ability to discover four-leaf clovers, which is evident from my track record. If I decide to embark on a mission to find these elusive plants, I can easily find three or more, often reaching up to ten, on any given day. However, I refrain from searching for them frequently to avoid diminishing their magical charm. Instead, I reserve specific days, which I refer to as four-leaf clover days, when I am feeling particularly anxious and in need of some good fortune.
During such days, I do not spend the entire day scouring for these lucky clovers. Once a month usually suffices, and I only glance at patches of clovers while going about my routine. Recently, while my kids were mountain biking on a challenging trail that takes an hour to complete, I followed them on foot, providing coaching to my youngest on difficult sections. As we progressed, I sporadically checked patches of clovers along the way, but we moved too quickly for me to examine them thoroughly.
We took a two-minute break halfway down the trail, and I noticed two four-leaf clovers in the patch next to me, bringing a tinge of disappointment since there were only two. However, as we resumed our descent without making any additional stops, I chanced upon a patch of five four-leaf clovers just as we reached the end of the trail. It seems like fortune favors me in this regard.
My children are always in awe of my ability and often inquire how I do it. According to research, there is only one four-leaf clover for every 10,000 three-leaf clovers, and I have found several five-leaf clovers, which are even rarer, occurring in one in 100,000 instances, and even a six-leaf clover. Perhaps I should consider a career in four-leaf clover research.
Maybe, just maybe, these clovers are not as elusive as we believe them to be, and they can be found anywhere. Nonetheless, discovering them is always a pleasant surprise and brings me comfort on my four-leaf clover days.
Is the universe on my side?
Whether they are common or not, finding four-leaf clovers always feels like a message to me. Whenever I am in need, they seem to magically appear, reassuring me just a little bit that the universe may have my back.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak with a group of inspiring male youth mentors for an evaluation project I am working on. Their project focused on teaching young boys how to appreciate and interact with nature in different ways. During the focus group discussion, the importance of magic in the natural world frequently came up. We spend so much time teaching science in schools in a clinical and reductionist manner that we often fail to teach children to step back and see the whole picture and feel the wonder and magic of it all.
These men believed that storytelling about experiences in nature allows boys to access the magic in a way that facts can’t. During the focus group, we were encouraged to share a personal story about our work with youth, not just facts. Permission to share stories and having those stories heard and honored was one of the best ways to spend an afternoon that I have experienced in a long time. If I had been told in advance that we would be sharing stories, a part of me probably would have rejected it as self-indulgent nonsense. Yet it turned out to be a truly powerful and moving experience, with most participants choking up at one point or another. The simple words, “just share your stories,” were enough to reduce me to tears.
The Importance of Four-Leaf Clovers in Our Lives
As an environmental consultant, I often find myself consumed by the need to present facts and figures in a precise and accurate manner. The pressure to get things right can be overwhelming, especially in today’s world where information overload is a constant struggle. It’s during these times that I turn to fiction for solace – where stories, magic, and personal experiences are allowed to take center stage. Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a day with a group of remarkable men who passionately advocated for the use of magic and storytelling as a means of learning. This was a profound realization for me.
I came to recognize that my personal connection with nature is closely tied to the stories of my own experiences – moments that fill me with awe and wonder, such as the quiet calm of a forest after a rainstorm, the serene beauty of a lake at dawn, or the sheer force of a waterfall. It was clear to me that I must not lose the magic in my writing, for it is the magic that touches people’s hearts.
Like a piece of enchanting music, or the natural magic of the world around us, there is magic in a well-crafted story, poem, or novel. It is this kind of magic that I strive to achieve in my writing, and four-leaf clovers serve as a constant reminder that such magic is within reach.
Over time, I have amassed a collection of pressed four-leaf clovers in my dictionary. Though I still search for them when I’m in need of a little boost, I’ve decided to stop plucking them from the ground. It’s time for others to have the chance to find them too. That said, I must admit that I might still be tempted to pick a few more – after all, I keep them pressed in my book of birthdays, and there are still some family members who are yet to receive one.
In the end, we all need a little magic in our lives, and four-leaf clovers serve as a symbol of that magic. They remind us to keep our hearts open to wonder and to cherish the stories that make life worth living.
